Backing up the time machine stop working

I have 2 TB of external SSD backup unit using a machine with my iMac. It worked great for 6 years and regular backups of my hard disk iMac. Suddenly it stopped backup and in fact the disk is now “read only”. I can neither delete folders nor any files from the external unit. I have noticed that the drive is used 1.83 TB, with only 166.03 GB “available”. If possible, I would not want lots of files that I have backed up in these years. Do not do anything with this problem. I ordered a 4 TB of an external SSD unit to replace 2 TB of an external unit, but I will not have it at my disposal at about the weekend. Is there any way to delete folders from this problematic external unit, so there is more space available, perhaps allowing me to access everything per units? Now it is necessary to erase everything on the unit and start again? Thank you!
